Mannar is a town on Mannar Island, off the northwest coast of Sri Lanka. The island is long and narrow, stretching west towards India, and the town sits at its eastern end, close to the causeway and bridge that link it to the mainland. From above, the most striking feature is the shape of the island itself, flat and pale, surrounded by shallow water.
Beyond the western tip, a chain of sandbanks and shoals known as Adam's Bridge or Rama's Setu continues towards the Indian coast. The town has a fort built by the Portuguese and later taken over by the Dutch, and the island is known for its old baobab trees, introduced by Arab traders. Its streets are compact, with fishing areas along the shore.
A Mannar map poster shows the town in the context of its island: the causeway, the shoreline and the narrow land extending west. The street grid is modest, but the shape of the coast gives the design real strength. It is a meaningful piece for anyone from the Northern Province.
A causeway and bridge connect the island to Sri Lanka's mainland, a thin line across the water at the edge of town.
The fort near the causeway, built by the Portuguese and rebuilt by the Dutch, appears as a compact geometric shape by the shore.
The long, low island stretches west towards Adam's Bridge, with shallow water around it forming a clear, smooth outline.
