Maradu is a municipality in Ernakulam district, Kerala, on the southeastern side of Kochi. On a map, water and land are woven together here. Backwater channels and lagoons surround parts of the town, leaving islands and peninsulas that are connected by bridges, while the built-up areas crowd close to the shores.
The town is crossed by the national highway that bypasses central Kochi, with the busy Kundannoor junction forming one of the main nodes in the road pattern. Around it, a looser network of lanes and residential streets fills the land between the water's edges, with coconut palms and small plots giving way to newer apartment blocks.
A Maradu map poster also recalls a widely reported event: in January 2020, four waterfront apartment complexes in Maradu were demolished following a Supreme Court order over coastal regulation violations. The episode drew national attention to building along Kerala's backwaters. Beyond that story, the map shows a suburb shaped entirely by its relationship with water.
Irregular shorelines, channels and small islands wrap around the town, creating an intricate outline where water occupies nearly as much space as land.
A major highway junction forms a bold node in the street pattern, linking Maradu to central Kochi, Vyttila and the roads heading south.
Short bridges connect island neighbourhoods to the mainland, giving the map a series of distinct pieces held together by narrow crossings.
