Māsāl lies in the west of Gilan Province in northern Iran, where the lowlands near the Caspian Sea meet the forested slopes of the Talysh Mountains. The town sits right at this transition. The flat, cultivated plain spreads out on one side, and the land starts to rise into the hills on the other. The streets form a compact centre with roads leading out in several directions.
The surrounding area is green and humid, unlike most of Iran. Rice paddies cover the lowland, and rivers flow down from the mountains across the plain.
