Nilwala River mouth
The river loops through the town before entering the sea. It draws a broad curve that separates the old fortified quarter from the newer streets and gives the map its strongest natural line.

Matara sits on the southern shore of Sri Lanka, where the Nilwala River bends toward the sea and meets the Indian Ocean. From above, the town is a band of streets squeezed between water on two sides. The coastal road and railway run roughly parallel to the shoreline before the town fans out into quieter residential lanes inland.
The old centre still shows traces of the Dutch period. There is a fortified quarter by the river mouth and a compact star fort a short walk away. Just offshore, a small island joined to the beach by a footbridge holds a Buddhist temple, one of the most recognisable shapes along this stretch of coast. Dondra Head, the island's southernmost point, lies a few kilometres east.
A Matara map poster turns all of this into a clean linework study. It shows the curve of the river, the sweep of the beaches, the tighter weave of the old quarter and the looser streets around it. In black and white, the coastline becomes the dominant line, and the town reads as a hinge between river and ocean.
The river loops through the town before entering the sea. It draws a broad curve that separates the old fortified quarter from the newer streets and gives the map its strongest natural line.
Near the river mouth, the former Dutch fort encloses a small, dense block of streets. The separate star fort nearby appears as a compact geometric outline on the map.
Parey Duwa, a rocky islet linked to the shore by a footbridge, sits just off the beach. It adds a small, distinctive detail to the smooth southern coastline.

For someone who grew up on the southern coast, or travelled the coastal railway south to reach it, this map holds the geometry of river, fort and sea in one frame. It is a quiet reminder of a place defined by water on both sides.
