Mayiladuthurai sits in the lower Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu, where the river divides into a fan of channels before it reaches the Bay of Bengal. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets on flat land. Irrigation canals and paddy fields surround it and stretch out towards the coast in every direction.
The centre is organised around the Mayuranathaswamy Temple. As in many Tamil temple towns, the streets run in rectangles around the sacred precinct, and processional routes frame the walls. The Kaveri runs along the town, and the railway lines from the junction station head off across the delta towards other towns.
The name is usually translated as the town of peacocks, which links it to the temple's legend. It became the headquarters of a new district in 2020. A Mayiladuthurai map poster captures a pattern the delta repeats across the region, with a temple core, a ring of streets, and water channels spreading out beyond the edges.
The streets around the Mayuranathaswamy Temple form nested rectangles, the classic plan of a South Indian temple town. On the map they give the centre a strong, geometric heart.
The river and its branches cross the flat delta land around the town. They draw fine, gently curving lines between fields and settlements.
Several rail lines meet at the town and then spread out across the plain. They add long straight strokes that contrast with the older curving streets.
