Międzyrzecz takes its name from its setting. The name translates roughly as between rivers, and the map shows exactly that. The Obra and its tributary the Paklica meet here in the Lubusz region of western Poland, and the town grew on the ground between their channels. Water frames the plan on more than one side, and the river lines give the streets a natural boundary.
The historic core is compact, with a market square and short streets leading away from it, while the remains of a medieval castle stand by the river at the edge of the old town. Later housing spreads outward in looser blocks, and the green corridors along the riverbanks remain largely unbuilt, which leaves soft open spaces running through the drawing.
The area is also known for the Międzyrzecz Fortified Region, a pre-war German defensive line to the east with an extensive network of underground tunnels, now one of the largest bat wintering sites in Europe. A Międzyrzecz map poster centred on the town shows the rivers and streets, and the forests and lakes of the district appear as the frame widens.
The Obra and the Paklica converge at the town, and their curving channels are the lines that give the map its shape and explain its name.
The ruins of the medieval castle, today part of a regional museum, sit beside the river where the old centre meets the water and the open ground of the banks.
The old town keeps a compact layout around its central square, a small, dense knot of blocks that stands out against the looser residential areas beyond.
