Montréal occupies most of a large island where the Ottawa River meets the St. Lawrence. At its centre rises Mount Royal, the hill that gave the city its name, and the streets are arranged around it. The main grid runs parallel to the river rather than to true north, so locals call the direction towards the mountain 'north', even though it points closer to north-west.
Old Montréal sits by the port on the St. Lawrence, a compact quarter of stone buildings and narrow streets. To the south-west, the Lachine Canal cuts a straight line through former industrial districts. In the river lie Île Sainte-Hélène and Île Notre-Dame, the islands used for Expo 67. Mount Royal Park itself was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
A Montréal map poster shows how tightly the city is organised. The long parallel streets of the Plateau, boulevard Saint-Laurent dividing east from west, the bridges reaching out to the South Shore and the dark mass of the mountain in the middle all read clearly. In Montréal the street plan comes close to being a portrait of the city.
The wooded hill interrupts the grid near the centre. Its park, cemeteries and university campus form a large irregular shape that the surrounding streets bend around.
The streets follow the St. Lawrence rather than the compass. This creates the well-known 'Montréal north' and gives the map its distinctive diagonal lean.
The two islands of Parc Jean-Drapeau lie in the wide river, and a series of long bridges, including the Jacques Cartier, connect the city to the South Shore.
