Mount Vernon is the seat of Knox County in central Ohio, built on the north bank of the Kokosing River. On a map the river runs along the southern edge of the town, and Main Street heads straight north from it through the historic centre to the public square. A regular grid of streets fills the land on either side.
The town was named after George Washington's estate in Virginia, and its square, with a Civil War monument at its centre, remains the heart of downtown. Mount Vernon is also the home of Mount Vernon Nazarene University, whose campus sits on the edge of town. Further east, the Kokosing Gap Trail follows an old rail line along the river.
