Mrauk U, in Myanmar's Rakhine State, was the capital of the Arakan kingdom from the fifteenth to the late eighteenth century. It lies inland, near the Kaladan River, in a landscape of low rocky hills and waterways that the city's builders worked into its defences, linking natural ridges with walls, moats and artificial lakes.
The town is known for its stone temples, among them the Shittaung and Koe-thaung, built with thick walls and dark interior passages. In 2024 the archaeological area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising the extent of the monuments scattered across the hills and valleys around the old royal centre.
On a map the former palace site sits near the middle, with the modern town around it and paths leading out to temple groups on the surrounding ridges. A Mrauk U map poster shows how closely the old capital followed its terrain, with water and hills determining the course of nearly every route.
The remains of the royal palace occupy a raised, terraced area near the centre, around which both the historic city and the present town are arranged.
Stone temples and stupas sit on the low ridges around the town, connected by paths that wind between hills and water on the map.
Creeks, moats and reservoirs were used to protect the capital, and their outlines still give the map a complex pattern of water and land.
