Myŏnggan-dong is a town in North Hamgyong Province, in the rugged northeastern corner of North Korea, and serves as a local administrative centre. The land rises quickly into mountains, and the town sits on lower ground where a valley opens out. Its roads and fields follow the water instead of climbing the slopes.
Like much of the region, the town is little documented in accessible sources, so its map is best read as a landscape. Streets are densest where the ground is flattest, looser clusters of buildings spread along the edges, and the hillsides around the settlement leave broad blank space on most sides.
A Myŏnggan-dong map poster reduces all of this to its essentials: a few main roads meeting near the centre, smaller streets fanning out, and watercourses threading through the valley. In the Noir or Blueprint styles, the empty mountain space becomes a dark or deep blue field that makes the town's small network stand out.
The town occupies the flattest land available, so its outline follows the shape of the valley and stops where the slopes begin to rise.
Main roads come together near the centre. This gives the map a clear focal point, with smaller streets and lanes spreading outward from it.
Wide areas of undeveloped, hilly ground around the town are left as open space on the poster. They make a calm frame for the fine lines of the settlement.
