Necochea lies on the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires Province, at the mouth of the Quequén Grande River. From above, the city spreads in a grid behind a long, straight shoreline. The river marks its eastern edge, and across the water is the port town of Quequén.
The city is a well-known summer resort with wide sandy beaches. Parque Miguel Lillo, a large coastal forest of pines, runs along the shore to the west of the centre. Its green mass separates the beachfront from the streets. The port at the river mouth handles grain from the surrounding pampas.
