New Bern occupies a point of land where the Trent River flows into the Neuse, which widens here into a broad estuary heading toward Pamlico Sound. From above, the historic centre is a tidy grid packed onto the peninsula, bounded by water on two sides, with bridges reaching across to the far shores and newer suburbs spreading west.
Founded in 1710 by Swiss and German settlers, the town took its name from Bern in Switzerland, and the bear still appears in its civic symbols. It served as the colonial capital of North Carolina, and Tryon Palace, the reconstructed governor's residence, stands near the Trent waterfront. In 1898 a local pharmacist, Caleb Bradham, created the drink later sold as Pepsi-Cola.
A New Bern map poster is largely about water. The two rivers take up much of the frame, their wide surfaces left blank, while the old grid sits in the angle between them like a carefully drawn plan. Long bridges, marinas and the curving shoreline give the composition its outline.
The Trent joins the Neuse right at the edge of downtown, creating a pointed peninsula that holds the original town plan and shapes the rest of the map.
Straight, evenly spaced streets fill the old town between the two rivers, a clear piece of eighteenth-century planning that shows up well at larger print sizes.
Bridges cross the wide Neuse and the Trent as thin straight lines over open water, tying the peninsula to the shores opposite.
