New Lynn is one of the main centres of West Auckland, sitting on the narrow land between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours, within sight of the Waitākere Ranges. On a map its most defining natural edge is the Whau River, a tidal estuary winding along the eastern side of the suburb, with inlets and mangrove fringes reaching in among the surrounding streets.
The town centre is organised around the Western Line railway, which was lowered into a trench through New Lynn in 2010 so that roads could pass over it. Beside the station stands LynnMall, which opened in 1963 as New Zealand's first American-style shopping mall. Together they form a dense, rectangular core surrounded by the looser residential streets of the wider suburb.
The area has a long industrial past in brick and pottery making, and the clay works shaped much of its early growth. A New Lynn map poster brings those layers together: the estuary edge, the railway line, the compact town centre and the residential streets that climb gradually toward the ranges in the west.
The tidal Whau winds along the eastern edge of New Lynn, its creeks and mangrove margins producing soft, branching water shapes against the regular suburban streets.
The Western Line passes through the town centre in a trench, and on the map its line runs straight through the core, with the station at the centre of activity.
LynnMall and the surrounding shops and apartments form a compact commercial block, the densest part of the map and a clear focal point for the composition.

Aiheā New Lynn
New Lynn is where many Aucklanders bought a first home, grew up near the mall or caught the train into the city every morning. A map of the suburb records that everyday geography, from the station platforms to the estuary walkways.
