New Rochelle lies in Westchester County, just north of the Bronx, and its southern edge is one of the most intricate coastlines near New York City. Necks of land reach into Long Island Sound, coves and harbours cut back between them, and a scatter of small islands sits offshore. Inland the picture changes. The city was founded in 1688 by Huguenot refugees and named after La Rochelle in France. Thomas Paine later lived here, and his cottage is still preserved.
