Newton Abbot grew where the River Lemon joins the Teign, at the point where the estuary narrows into a river valley. The older centre gathers around a few curving shopping streets, while residential areas climb the surrounding hillsides. From above, the town has an uneven, fan-like shape, with flatter ground along the rivers and more irregular streets spreading over the higher land.
The Victorian railway made Newton Abbot an important junction and engineering centre for the Great Western Railway, and the tracks still cut a strong line through the town. Beside the Teign lies the racecourse, whose oval is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map. In the centre, St Leonard's Tower marks where the declaration of William of Orange was first read in 1688.
A Newton Abbot map poster brings all of this into one frame: the widening estuary heading toward Teignmouth and the sea, the meandering rivers, the railway curving along the valley, and the lanes and hedgerows of the Devon countryside around the edges. It is a detailed, varied composition, as much about landscape as about streets.
East of the town the Teign widens into its estuary, a broad tidal channel whose smooth outline contrasts with the dense grain of the streets.
Set on low ground beside the river, the racecourse forms a large, clean oval that stands out immediately against the surrounding streets and fields.
The main line sweeps through the valley past the station, a reminder of the town's long association with the Great Western Railway.
