Nieuw-Vennep stands on land that was a lake until the middle of the nineteenth century. When the Haarlemmermeer was pumped dry, engineers divided the new polder into a strict grid of canals, ditches and roads, and that geometry still governs the map. The original village grew along the Hoofdvaart, the main canal that runs diagonally through the polder, and the town has spread out from there.
Much of today's town is recent. Getsewoud, a large district built in phases since around 2000, added curving streets, ponds and green corridors that soften the rigid polder lines. Around it, rectangular fields, greenhouses and drainage channels continue in every direction. Schiphol airport is only a short drive to the north, and its runways lie on the same reclaimed ground.
A Nieuw-Vennep map poster shows how a landscape made by engineers becomes a place to live. The straight water lines, the orderly field parcels and the newer, looser residential streets sit side by side, each drawn in the same crisp line. The more closely you look, the more of the reclamation plan you can read in it.
The main canal of the Haarlemmermeer polder runs straight through the town. The first houses and shops of Nieuw-Vennep were built along this long, ruled line.
This large newer district adds curving streets, water features and parkland. It is a deliberate contrast with the right angles of the surrounding polder and the older village core.
Beyond the built-up area, straight roads and drainage ditches divide the land into long rectangular parcels. From above, the original nineteenth-century layout is still easy to see.

Aiheā Nieuw-Vennep
The Haarlemmermeer is a story told in straight lines, and this map shows it plainly. It appeals to people who live in Nieuw-Vennep, to those who pass it every day on the way to work or the airport, and to anyone who likes the Dutch habit of drawing land out of water.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the year you moved in, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the engineered grid well. Files come as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF.
