North Platte sits in west-central Nebraska on the narrow stretch of land between the North Platte and South Platte rivers, just above the point where they join to form the Platte. The largest man-made feature is Union Pacific's Bailey Yard, the biggest railroad classification yard in the world, a vast fan of parallel tracks stretching for miles along the western side of town.
