Two city districts
The southern and northern districts form two separate clusters on either side of the river valley. This division gives the poster an unusual two-part composition.

Novyy Urengoy stands in the far north of western Siberia, just below the Arctic Circle, on flat ground scattered with lakes, marshes and patches of northern forest. The city is divided into a southern and a northern district, separated by the valley of the Yevoyakha River. From above, both districts are compact clusters of large blocks set on open land dotted with water.
The city was founded in the 1970s to serve the Urengoy gas field, one of the largest natural gas fields in the world, and it is still closely tied to the gas industry. Building on permafrost shaped its design: large apartment blocks, wide spaces between them, and utility lines raised above the ground. Winters are long and severe, and in summer the land around the city is dominated by water.
A Novyy Urengoy map poster shows a city of deliberate geometry set against a broken-up natural landscape. The regular blocks and straight roads of the planned districts contrast with the irregular shapes of the many lakes and streams around them. The map is especially striking in Noir or Blueprint, which bring out the sense of a settlement drawn onto an empty surface.
The southern and northern districts form two separate clusters on either side of the river valley. This division gives the poster an unusual two-part composition.
The river winds between the two districts through a low valley. It is the main natural line crossing the city and divides the map clearly.
Countless small lakes and ponds surround the city, and their irregular outlines contrast with the straight streets. They form a scattered pattern that fills the edges of the map.
