Nurota sits on the northern slopes of the Nurota Mountains in central Uzbekistan, where the hills meet the edge of the Kyzylkum desert. From above, the town is a green patch of gardens and streets fed by springs and channels. Open dry land stretches away to the north toward Aydarkul lake.
Its history is long. Tradition links the town to a fortress founded by Alexander the Great, and the remains of that citadel still stand on a hill above the centre. Below it, the Chashma spring and its pool of sacred fish, surrounded by a mosque complex, draw pilgrims from across the country. Underground karez channels once supplied the area with water as well.
A Nurota map poster shows how water and terrain shape a settlement in dry country. Streets gather close to the spring and the fortress, then loosen into gardens and fields before giving way to open land. The result is a compact, irregular outline, very different from the grids of newer Central Asian towns.
The ruins of the old citadel rise above the town. On the map the hill forms a quiet open space, and the surrounding streets fan out from it.
The sacred spring and its mosque complex sit at the foot of the fortress hill. Together they mark the spiritual and historic centre of Nurota.
North of the town the gardens end and dry land opens toward the Kyzylkum. The poster captures this sharp shift from oasis streets to empty terrain.

Aiheā Nurota
Nurota draws pilgrims, walkers heading into the mountains and travellers on their way to Aydarkul and the yurt camps of the desert. A map of the town is a restrained reminder of that journey, and of a place where water decides everything.
Customise the title and subtitle, for example with the date of your visit, and choose a style. The warm Sand version suits the desert setting, while Classic black & white stays neutral. Every $9 download includes six print sizes.
