Ober-Ramstadt lies southeast of Darmstadt in southern Hesse, where the Modau river leaves the hills of the Odenwald. From above, the town is shaped by its valley. The older centre follows the river, and newer districts climb the slopes on either side. Forest edges surround the built-up area.
The Modau draws a gently curving line through the middle of the map, with roads and a railway sharing the valley floor beside it. Residential streets on the slopes run along the contours, and their curved, stacked lines show the rising ground even without relief shading.
