Odenton is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, roughly halfway between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. It grew around a railway junction in the nineteenth century and takes its name from Oden Bowie, a Maryland governor and railroad president. The MARC Penn Line commuter service still stops here, and its tracks cut diagonally through the community.
Odenton borders Fort George G. Meade, a large military installation that shapes the local economy and population. Much of the community consists of residential subdivisions from recent decades, with curving streets and cul-de-sacs set among stands of trees. Maryland Route 175 runs through the area and Route 32 passes to the north, connecting it to the wider corridor.
An Odenton map poster shows a place made of distinct pieces: the straight rail line, the separate street pattern of the base, the looping suburban neighbourhoods and the wooded gaps between them. The result is a detailed and varied composition, a good picture of how communities in the corridor between the two cities have taken shape.
The MARC Penn Line runs straight through Odenton, a strong diagonal across the map that marks the historic reason the community exists at all.
The military installation next door has its own street pattern and large open areas, forming a clearly different zone along one side of the frame.
Curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs are threaded between patches of forest, producing the intricate, organic shapes typical of suburban Maryland.
