Okemos is an unincorporated community in Meridian Township, just east of East Lansing and Michigan State University. From above, it is mostly curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and wooded lots, laid out in the loose pattern of postwar and later American suburbs. Commercial strips line the main roads, and parks and golf courses leave open spaces between neighbourhoods.
The Red Cedar River winds west through the area towards the MSU campus, with green banks and floodplain along much of its course. Grand River Avenue and Okemos Road form the main cross, and Interstate 96 runs along the southern side. The small historic centre sits near where the old road crosses the river.
The community is named after Chief Okemos, an Ojibwe leader of the nineteenth century, and today it is known for its schools and its closeness to the university. The Okemos map poster shows a green, winding suburb held together by a river and a few major roads. It is a gentle, detailed composition.

Curving streets and cul-de-sacs fill the neighbourhoods, drawing loops and branches across the print.
Grand River Avenue and Okemos Road meet near the old centre, the two routes that organise the rest of the community.
