Okha lies in the far north of Sakhalin Island, in Russia's Far East, not far from the Sea of Okhotsk coast. It is one of the northernmost towns on the island. The surrounding land is low and flat, covered with taiga, marsh and lakes, and edged by lagoons along the shore.
The town grew up around oil. Drilling in northern Sakhalin was under way by the 1920s, and Okha became the centre of the island's oil industry, with fields, pipelines and service roads across the district. The region is also remembered for the 1995 earthquake that destroyed the nearby settlement of Neftegorsk.
An Okha map poster shows a compact grid of streets, largely made up of Soviet-era blocks, set within a sparse, open landscape. Roads and pipeline corridors run out toward the oil fields, and lakes and coastal wetlands form soft, irregular shapes around the town. In black and white, this remote place has the clarity of a survey sheet.
Okha's streets form a tight, regular pattern of residential blocks, the planned layout typical of Soviet industrial towns. It stands out clearly against the open land around it.
Long, straight service roads and corridors lead from the town to the surrounding oil fields. They add bold lines across the flat terrain.
Small lakes, marshes and lagoons dot northern Sakhalin. On the print they appear as scattered, organic shapes in the white space around the town.
