Orenburg sits where the steppe meets the Ural River, and the river is the central feature of its map. It loops along the southern side of the city with a wide wooded floodplain, while the Sakmara joins it just to the west. The old centre sits on high ground above the river, with a fairly regular grid of streets that dates back to the city's early plan.
Orenburg was founded in the eighteenth century as a fortress on Russia's southeastern frontier and became a gateway for trade with Central Asia. The Ural River is traditionally seen as a boundary between Europe and Asia, and a pedestrian bridge from the city's embankment crosses it, letting people walk from one continent to the other. The city is also known for its fine, hand-knitted Orenburg shawls.
An Orenburg map poster shows the city balanced on the edge of its river. The ordered grid of the centre sits above the embankment, the river's loops and oxbows spread out below, and the wooded floodplain on the far bank remains mostly unbuilt. The difference between the built-up north bank and the open south bank reads clearly in black and white.
The river bends in wide curves beneath the centre, with oxbows and wooded floodplain. It gives the lower half of the poster its natural, flowing lines.
A pedestrian bridge crosses the Ural from the city embankment, a crossing between continents in the traditional sense. On the map it is a short line linking the two banks.
The centre above the river follows a regular street plan inherited from the city's early years, forming a tidy block pattern at the top of the frame.
