Paderborn Map Poster & Print
Paderborn has an unusual feature at its centre. Just below the cathedral, more than two hundred springs rise and form the Pader, one of Germany's shortest rivers. It runs only a few kilometres before joining the Lippe. On the map, these springs and short streams make a pattern of small channels and ponds inside the old town.
Around this core, the old town is compact. Its streets reach toward the cathedral from a ring of roads that follows the line of the former walls. Outside the ring, the city spreads out in residential districts, green spaces and the university campus. Motorways and railway lines around the outer edge complete the picture.
Paderborn's history goes back to Charlemagne, who held court here. In 799 he met Pope Leo III in Paderborn, a meeting that led to his coronation as emperor. A Paderborn map poster shows that early importance in the density of the old town, with the springs of the Pader at the centre.

A ring of roads follows the line of the medieval walls. It gives the city centre a clear, rounded outline and separates it from the newer districts outside.

The cathedral and the excavated Carolingian palace remains sit at the heart of the old town. Many of the city's streets lead toward this central point.
