Padingbüttel lies in the Land Wursten, a stretch of coastal marsh on the eastern side of the Weser estuary in northern Lower Saxony. The landscape is almost perfectly flat, and on a map it reads as a pattern of long, narrow fields separated by drainage ditches, with a few roads crossing it and farmsteads set along them. Toward the sea, the dike forms a firm, continuous line.
Settlements along this coast were traditionally built on raised mounds, known as Wurten, to protect them from flooding before the dikes were closed, and the region takes its name from them. Padingbüttel is a small place, with a territory of around nine square kilometres, and its map is shaped far more by water management and farming than by any dense street network.
Since 2015 Padingbüttel has belonged to the municipality of Wurster Nordseeküste. Farms and houses are strung along the few local roads rather than gathered in a dense centre, giving the settlement a loose, open character on the map.
