The founding grid
The historic centre follows the regular plan laid out in the seventeenth century. Its straight streets run in parallel lines, and in black and white they form one of the clearest patterns on the map.

Palma di Montechiaro lies in the province of Agrigento on Sicily's southern side, a few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean. From above, the town reads as a compact block of straight, parallel streets set on rising ground. Its outer edges break up where the slopes steepen. Beyond them the map opens into fields, orchards and the scattered lines of country roads that lead down to the shore.
The town was founded in 1637 by the Tomasi family, and the order of that plan still shows in the street pattern. Streets cross at regular angles, and the main church and the family's former residence sit near the centre. The Tomasi line later produced Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of The Leopard, and literary visitors often come here for that connection. On a Palma di Montechiaro map poster the planned grid stands apart from the looser terrain around it.
South of the town the land drops toward a coastline of low cliffs and small bays. The Castello di Montechiaro stands on a headland there, a medieval stronghold that gave the town its second name. On paper this makes a clear composition, with a dense grid in the upper part of the frame, open countryside through the middle and the thin edge of the sea along the bottom.
The historic centre follows the regular plan laid out in the seventeenth century. Its straight streets run in parallel lines, and in black and white they form one of the clearest patterns on the map.
The Castello di Montechiaro sits on a rocky point above the sea south of the town. On the poster it appears as a small mark where the coastline bends.
Between the town and the shore, country roads and field boundaries break the land into irregular pieces. They make a quiet contrast to the ordered streets uphill.

Aiheā Palma di Montechiaro
Some people hang this map because their family came from Palma di Montechiaro. Others know it through The Leopard, or remember a summer on the Agrigento coast. The poster keeps the town's plan and its route to the sea in one frame, and it stays readable from across a room.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a family name, a date or a few words of your own. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Download HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
