Paragould sits on Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of higher, wooded ground that rises above the flat farmland of the Mississippi Delta in north-east Arkansas. From above, the downtown grid follows the railroad lines that cross it, while newer streets curve more freely over the uneven ground of the ridge. The texture of the map changes noticeably from the centre to the edges.
Beyond the town, the land changes quickly. On either side of the ridge, Delta fields spread out in large rectangles, divided by straight roads and drainage ditches. A Paragould map poster shows the town sitting on this natural rise, a pattern of streets within a landscape defined by agriculture and by the long line of the ridge.
The town was founded in the 1880s where two railroads crossed. Its name combines the surnames of two rival railroad figures, J. W. Paramore and Jay Gould. It is the seat of Greene County and a regional centre for trade and services in this corner of Arkansas, and Crowley's Ridge State Park is a short drive away.
The rail lines that gave the town its start cross near downtown. They draw long straight lines that anchor the street grid and define the historic centre.
The town sits on a narrow ridge of higher ground, where streets bend around slopes and wooded areas, unlike the dead-straight roads of the surrounding lowlands.
Beyond the ridge, broad rectangular fields stretch toward the horizon. Roads and ditches divide them into a regular pattern that frames the town on the map.
