Paraparaumu is the largest town on the Kāpiti Coast, north of Wellington. Its map is organised in bands running parallel to the sea: the long, straight beach along the Tasman, the suburb of Paraparaumu Beach behind it, then the town centre along the main north–south transport corridor, and finally the hills rising to the east.
The Kāpiti Expressway and the North Island Main Trunk railway run through the district, stitching the town into the route between Wellington and the rest of the North Island. Between them lie curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and green reserves, while Kāpiti Coast Airport occupies open land between the town centre and the beach.
Offshore lies Kāpiti Island, a nature reserve visible from almost every point on the beach and a familiar outline for anyone who knows this coast. A Paraparaumu map poster places the town between water and hills, with the sea left open along one side and the ordered bands of the town filling the rest of the frame.
A long, gently curving shoreline faces the Tasman Sea, with a suburb of low-density streets behind it, drawn as a clean coastal line on the western edge.
The expressway and the main trunk railway run north to south through the town, forming strong parallel lines that divide the beach side from the inland suburbs.
The airport runways occupy a broad open area between the town centre and the beach, a set of straight strokes clearly visible among the curving residential streets.
