Parit Buntar sits in the far north-west of Perak, where the Kerian River marks the boundary with Penang. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets set against a wide, flat plain. Its lines of shophouses and the market area give way quickly to open agricultural land, so the built-up core ends abruptly and reads clearly on paper.
The name itself points to the landscape. In Malay, parit means a ditch or channel, and the Kerian district around the town is crossed by irrigation and drainage canals that feed its rice fields. On a map these channels appear as long, straight strokes, running parallel or meeting at right angles, a surveyed geometry quite unlike the loose curves of the river nearby.
A Parit Buntar map poster captures that contrast: the winding Kerian on one side, the ruled lines of the paddy scheme on the other, and a small town grid holding the two together. Across the river lies Nibong Tebal in Penang, so the frame often catches two states facing each other over one waterway, joined by road bridges.
The river curves along the town's northern side and forms the line between Perak and Penang, giving the map a strong natural edge that bends against the straight streets.
Channels built for the Kerian rice scheme cross the surrounding plain in long, straight runs, turning the farmland around the town into a pattern of fine parallel lines.
Shophouse streets and the market district are packed into a small area, so the centre shows as a dense knot of blocks surrounded by open, lightly drawn land.
