Park Forest was built from the late 1940s as a planned community for returning veterans and young families, one of the best-known examples of its kind in the United States. From above, it looks nothing like the rigid Chicago grid to the north: streets curve, loop and end in cul-de-sacs, arranged around parks and school grounds.
The village became widely known through William H. Whyte's book The Organization Man, which studied its residents as a model of postwar suburban life. The plan reflects its intentions, with rental townhouse courts, single-family neighbourhoods and a central shopping area laid out as parts of one design.
A Park Forest map poster shows this planning as a pattern. The curving residential lanes, the courtyard groupings of the townhouse areas and the open spaces between them create a drawing that is both orderly and organic, a clear record of mid-century ideas about how people might live.
Loops, crescents and cul-de-sacs replace the usual Midwestern grid, giving the whole village a soft, flowing texture that stands out clearly in black and white.
The original rental areas are arranged in groups around shared courtyards, visible on the map as repeating clusters of short access roads.
Open spaces, school grounds and wooded strips are threaded through the neighbourhoods, a deliberate part of the plan rather than leftover land.
