Pawtucket is organised around a single point: the falls on the Blackstone River, where fresh water meets the tidal Seekonk. The downtown sits beside this drop, bridges cross the river close to it, and the older street grid radiates from the riverbanks before settling into dense residential blocks that fill the city to its boundaries with Providence, Central Falls and Massachusetts.
The falls explain the city's place in history. In 1793 Slater Mill was built here, a cotton-spinning mill widely described as the starting point of the American industrial revolution, and it is now part of a national historical park. A Pawtucket map poster shows the river running through the heart of the city, flanked by the sites of former mills.
Around this industrial core, the rest of the map is a close weave of streets laid out in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with an interstate highway cutting through on its way between Providence and Boston. Parks and cemeteries appear as open spaces within a city that is otherwise almost entirely built up.
The Blackstone River drops through the city centre and becomes the tidal Seekonk River just below, the natural feature around which the whole town grew.
Beside the falls stands the 1793 mill often credited with launching American industrial manufacturing, now preserved within a national historical park.
Close-set streets fill almost every part of the city, interrupted by parks, cemeteries and the interstate that slices through on a north-south line.

Aiheā Pawtucket
Pawtucket appeals to people who value industrial history, to Rhode Islanders who feel its identity is distinct from Providence next door, and to families whose roots go back to its mills. The river at the centre gives the composition a clear focus.
Add a title, a subtitle and your own coordinates, perhaps marking a street near the falls. Select from Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Blueprint especially suits a city defined by engineering and manufacturing.
