Peterhead stands on a headland in Aberdeenshire, the easternmost town on mainland Scotland, where the North Sea coast turns north toward Fraserburgh. The sea surrounds the town on several sides. On the map its streets gather around a series of harbours and basins, and massive breakwaters shelter the broad sweep of the bay to the south.
Peterhead is one of the busiest fishing ports in Europe, and the harbour dominates the drawing: quays, docks and piers form a complex shape of straight edges and enclosed water. Behind them, the older streets of pink granite houses run in a compact pattern, while newer housing spreads inland in looser curves. The River Ugie reaches the sea just to the north.
The town was also home to Peterhead Prison, opened in the 1880s and now a museum. Its convicts quarried the granite used for the harbour of refuge breakwaters. A Peterhead map poster captures a place defined by its relationship with the sea, a working port drawn in the clear lines of stone and water.
A sequence of docks and quays fills the waterfront. Their straight edges and enclosed water make the most intricate and recognisable part of the map.
Long stone breakwaters reach across the bay south of the town, drawing bold lines into the sea that frame the sheltered water inside them.
North of the town the River Ugie meets the coast, and its final curve gives the upper edge of the map a softer, natural shape.

Aiheā Peterhead
Peterhead means something particular to fishing families, to people who left the north-east for work, and to anyone who has watched boats come in past the breakwaters. You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a boat's name, a family name or a year.
Noir and Blueprint suit the harbour's hard edges, while Paper and Sand give a gentler, more nautical feel. Classic black & white is the most direct. Download the HD files for $9, or order a matte printed poster, with or without a wooden frame.
