Poso sits on the northern coast of Central Sulawesi, facing the calm waters of the Gulf of Tomini. The Poso River runs through the town to the sea, and it is the defining feature of the map: a curving channel that splits the streets into two halves joined by bridges. The river flows north out of Lake Poso, one of Indonesia's deepest lakes, which lies in the highlands to the south near Tentena.
