Realejo Alto is the upper historic core of Los Realejos, on the western edge of the Orotava Valley on Tenerife's northern side. The ground falls steeply here, from the pine-covered heights below Teide toward the ocean. On a map, the streets follow contour lines where they can and drop sharply where they cannot. Ravines, the barrancos typical of the island, cut deep lines between the settled ridges.
The town is closely tied to the early Castilian period on Tenerife. Its Church of Santiago Apóstol is traditionally regarded as one of the first churches founded on the island after the conquest at the end of the fifteenth century. Los Realejos is also known across the Canaries for its May fireworks, held around the festival of the Cross.
