Redondo Beach sits on the southern part of Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County. From above its western edge is a long, smooth line of sand, broken in the north by King Harbor, a marina of breakwaters and moles. Inland, the streets form a dense grid that climbs the bluffs and flattens out toward Torrance and the rest of the South Bay.
The pier is the most recognisable shape in town. Unlike a single straight pier, it has a horseshoe loop, which on a map reads like a small drawn symbol at the edge of the water. Redondo also has a place in the history of surfing: in the early twentieth century George Freeth gave surfing demonstrations here, helping to introduce the sport to California.
A Redondo Beach map poster captures the city's clear, three-part structure: the ocean, the harbour and beach strip, and the grid of residential streets behind them. Pacific Coast Highway runs through it as a broad line, and to the south the coast begins to rise toward the Palos Verdes hills.
The pier forms a distinctive loop over the water rather than a single straight line. It is one of the most recognisable shapes along the South Bay coast.
A small harbour protected by breakwaters in the north of the city. Its angular moles and marina basins break up the otherwise smooth coastline.
Behind the beach, residential streets form a tight grid that climbs the bluffs. Pacific Coast Highway cuts through it on a long diagonal.
