Reisterstown lies in Baltimore County, northwest of Baltimore, in the hilly Piedmont country of central Maryland. Its map is organised around one long line: the old road from Baltimore toward the west, which becomes Main Street as it passes through the historic centre. The town takes its name from John Reister, a German immigrant who founded it in the 1750s along the route that later became the Reisterstown Turnpike.
