Rio Negro sits in southern Paraná, on the river that gives it its name and that also marks the boundary with the state of Santa Catarina. Directly across the water lies Mafra, and the two towns form a single urban area split by a state line. On the map, the river is the central feature, with bridges stitching the two halves together.
The town grew in the nineteenth century along a route used by cattle drovers moving between the southern plains and São Paulo, and it later received many European immigrants, including German-speaking settlers. Its streets extend from the riverbank onto gently rising ground, with a grid that bends where it meets the meandering channel.
A Rio Negro map poster frames the river as a dividing and connecting line at once. The meanders give the composition movement, the bridges give it structure, and the two street networks on either side show how a border can run straight through what looks, from above, like one town.
The river winds through the centre of the urban area and forms the Paraná–Santa Catarina border, a flowing line that dominates the map and splits the town in two.
Mafra occupies the opposite bank, so the poster shows two municipalities in two states that read as one continuous urban fabric joined by bridges.
Streets form a broadly regular grid that shifts direction near the water, adapting to the river's bends and producing a varied, layered street pattern.

Aiheā Rio Negro
For families in Rio Negro or Mafra, or anyone with roots in the immigrant communities of the region, the map records a place defined by its river and its crossing. It works well as a gift for someone who has moved away.
