Rocky Mount grew around the falls of the Tar River and later around the railroad, and both still shape the map. The main rail line runs straight through downtown along Main Street, which also marks the boundary between Nash and Edgecombe counties, so the city straddles two counties. From above, a regular grid of blocks sits on either side of this north-south spine.
To the north, the Tar River bends past Rocky Mount Mills, a cotton mill founded in 1818 and now redeveloped as a mixed-use district.
