Rovenky lies in the south of Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine, in the hills of the Donets Ridge. Like many towns in the Donbas, it grew around coal mining, and the industry shaped both its economy and its layout. The landscape is rolling steppe cut by small valleys, and the town spreads across this uneven ground instead of following a single grid.
