Saint-Amand-les-Eaux grew around a medieval abbey on the Scarpe river, and the map still shows it. The historic streets gather near the river and the old abbey grounds. The town's name comes from its thermal springs, which have been used since Roman times and still supply a spa. Its best-known monument is the tall baroque tower of the former abbey church.
