Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 on the marshy delta where the Neva meets the Gulf of Finland. On the map the city is a composition of islands, channels and embankments, crossed by rivers and canals such as the Moika, the Fontanka and the Griboyedov Canal, which curve in parallel arcs through the historic centre.
On the southern bank, three main avenues, including Nevsky Prospekt, radiate from the Admiralty in a trident pattern. Across the river, Vasilievsky Island has a strict grid of streets known as lines, and the Peter and Paul Fortress sits on its own small island facing the Winter Palace. The bascule bridges over the Neva are raised at night during the navigation season.
The city served as the capital of Russia from 1712 until 1918, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Saint Petersburg map poster shows how water organises the whole plan, from the wide Neva to the smallest canals, together with the belt of newer districts beyond the delta.
Three straight avenues fanning out from the Admiralty, with Nevsky Prospekt as the longest, forming a clear radial pattern at the centre of the historic city.
A regular grid of numbered streets on the largest island of the delta, where each side of a street is called a line, a detail found nowhere else on the map.
The Moika, Griboyedov Canal and Fontanka curving in parallel across the centre, dividing it into islands linked by a great many bridges.

Aiheā Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg is chosen by people with family roots in the city, by those who studied or lived there, and by travellers who remember white nights by the Neva. Its map is intricate yet ordered, and it holds its detail well at larger print sizes.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, an address or a date. All five styles are available; Blueprint and Noir suit the canals and islands especially well. Download six HD sizes for $9 or order a printed, optionally framed poster.
