Sālūmbar lies in southern Rajasthan, in the hilly country south-east of Udaipur where the Aravalli range breaks into ridges and valleys. The town grew in a basin among these hills, and on a map the older quarter is a dense web of narrow, irregular lanes, with newer roads running outward along the valleys.
Historically, Sālūmbar was the seat of the Rawats of Salumbar, among the most senior noble houses of the Mewar kingdom, and their fortified residences and old buildings still mark the town. In 2023 it became the headquarters of a new district of the same name.
