San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye, the largest island off the coast of Belize. The island is long and very narrow, and the town fills a thin strip of it. On one side lies the Caribbean, sheltered by the Belize Barrier Reef a short distance offshore. On the other lies a shallow lagoon. The street layout is simple and linear. A few parallel streets run along the length of the island, crossed by short lanes that connect the beach side to the lagoon side.
