San Salvador lies in a highland valley at the foot of the San Salvador Volcano, also known as Quetzaltepec, whose broad mass fills the western side of any wide map. Lake Ilopango, a large crater lake, sits a short distance to the east. Between them the city stretches in a long band of neighbourhoods, ravines and hillside roads, shaped as much by the terrain as by planning.
The historic centre keeps a rectilinear grid laid out around its plazas, including Plaza Libertad and Plaza Gerardo Barrios, where the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace stand. West of the centre the pattern loosens into curving residential streets and wide avenues such as Paseo General Escalón. Frequent earthquakes gave the valley its old nickname, Valle de las Hamacas, the valley of hammocks.
A San Salvador map poster shows that shift from the orthogonal core to looser suburbs that follow the terrain. Deep ravines appear as breaks in the street network, and roads thin out on the lower slopes of the volcano. The city has rebuilt itself many times, and that layering can be seen in every district.
The old grid around Plaza Gerardo Barrios and Plaza Libertad forms the densest, most regular block pattern on the map, anchored by the cathedral and the National Palace.
San Salvador Volcano rises beside the city, its slopes marked by thinning roads and winding tracks that contrast with the tight urban fabric at its base.
East of the city, the crater lake of Ilopango forms a broad body of water that stands out when the frame is pulled back to include the wider metropolitan area.

Aiheā San Salvador
For Salvadorans abroad, San Salvador is often the map that stands for home: the plazas of the centre, a childhood colonia, the drive up Escalón. For visitors it records a capital shaped by volcanoes and earthquakes, drawn simply enough to read from across a room.
Add a family surname, a wedding date or a neighbourhood name in the title and subtitle, and keep or edit the coordinates line. The five styles run from Classic black & white and Noir to the warmer Paper and Sand and the cool Blueprint.
