Sanafr lies in the northern Red Sea, just east of the larger Tiran Island. Together the two islands sit across the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. On a map Sanafr is a compact desert island with an irregular coastline and no roads or settlements. The surrounding reef shallows and the deep channels near Tiran do most of the work on the page.
The island's significance comes from its position rather than its size. The Straits of Tiran are the only sea passage into the Gulf of Aqaba, and control of these islands has mattered to the surrounding states for decades. Under an agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, sovereignty over Tiran and Sanafr passed to Saudi Arabia in 2017.
With no streets to render, a Sanafr Island map poster is all coastline, a pale land shape set against open water with its larger neighbour at the edge. It is an austere image, closer to a nautical chart than a city plan, and it suits anyone interested in geography, borders and the narrow places where seas meet.
The waterway between the Sinai coast and the islands, and the single entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is the reason this small island appears in history books.
Sanafr sits just east of Tiran, and the two outlines appear together at most scales, a large island and a smaller one sharing the same shallows.
With no harbour, roads or buildings, the island is rendered by its coastline alone, a clean, uninterrupted edge against the sea.

Aiheā Sanafr Island
Some maps are hung because they show a home, and others because they show an idea. Sanafr belongs to the second kind. It is a small piece of desert at one of the Middle East's most watched straits, and a strong choice for a study or office wall.
