Schaumburg lies about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and its map is a textbook of postwar American suburban planning. Residential areas are laid out in curving streets, loops and cul-de-sacs, grouped into neighbourhoods separated by wide arterial roads that follow the Midwestern mile grid.
The Jane Addams Tollway, I-90, crosses the area, and near its interchanges sits a large commercial district anchored by Woodfield Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in the Midwest, with office parks, hotels and parking fields around it. To the east, Busse Woods, part of the Ned Brown Forest Preserve, adds a large area of woodland and a lake.
