Sedam is in Kalaburagi district in northern Karnataka, on the dry, level uplands of the Deccan plateau. From above, the town is a compact core of narrow, irregular streets. Newer blocks spread out along the roads leading away from it. Around the town the land is open and mostly flat, with farm plots and scattered villages, so the built area is easy to pick out on the map.
What sets Sedam apart is the ground beneath it. The area is rich in limestone, and cement production has long been the town's main industry.
