Sept-Îles lies on the Côte-Nord of Quebec, on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Its map is shaped by a large, almost circular bay, sheltered by the group of islands that gives the town its name. The streets follow the curve of the shoreline, with the boreal forest close behind.
The deep, protected bay made Sept-Îles one of the major ore-shipping ports in North America. Iron ore arrives by rail from mines in northern Quebec and Labrador, and the port installations at Pointe-Noire on the western side of the bay are visible even on a simple street map.
A Sept-Îles map poster centres on that bay: the curved waterfront, the town's grid pressed against it, and the islands scattered across the entrance. In black and white, the large water surface creates a striking empty space, framed by the coastline and the dense forest beyond.
The town wraps around a broad, rounded bay, one of the largest natural harbours on the St. Lawrence, forming the dominant shape on the map.
A group of islands lies across the mouth of the bay, the archipelago that gives Sept-Îles its name, dotting the open water with small outlines.
Ore trains from Labrador and northern Quebec end at the port, and the rail line and docks at Pointe-Noire add industrial lines to the western shore.
