Shimoda sits near the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture. From above, the town fills a narrow flat area between a deep, sheltered bay and steep wooded hills. A river runs through the centre to the harbour, and rocky coves and beaches stretch along the coastline on both sides.
Shimoda has a special place in Japanese history. In 1854, Commodore Perry's fleet anchored here after the treaty that opened Japan to foreign ships, and the town became one of the first ports open to Americans. The first United States consulate in Japan was set up at Gyokusen-ji temple, under Townsend Harris.
A Shimoda map poster shows a harbour town on a small, human scale. The tight grid of the old streets sits between water and hills, the bay's curves and breakwaters frame one side, and the steep slopes appear as quiet open spaces. The ropeway hill of Mount Nesugata rises just behind the centre.
The deep, protected bay with its breakwaters is the town's natural focus and the place where Perry's ships once anchored.
A short lane along a small canal in the old town, lined with historic buildings and linked to the town's opening to the West.
The steep hill right behind the town centre rises sharply from the streets and gives the map a strong green edge.
